Friends — John Paddie Music

I've updated my Friends and Colleagues page with some wonderful folks!

Luke Kirkwood provides staffing and contracting services for musicians and directors in the Houston area. He's a joy to work with, and his network is extensive; he found me a sub in less than 24 hours, and had the contract signed in a day after that. I recommend him for subs, accompanists, directors, or any other staffing needs you have!

Ben Lee (SoLee Music) is a wonderful arranger and composer for the marching arts. We collaborated in 2017 for Morris HS in Morris, OK, and that arrangement is for sale on Ben's website! If you're looking for a custom show, he's a great resource!

Blog Update

Howdy again! I wanted to share some thoughts about ideas I had for Music In Our World. I'd like to continue along with the interview-style format, and keep a broad and light environment for a meaningful conversation to flow. I'd also like to add to that a solo-style episode where I research and discuss a topic that you (the listeners) provide! If you want my opinion about something or you want me to research a topic and present on it, I'd love to start posting half-hour episodes in line with the interview-style ones. Please let me know what you think here or in an email! John@JohnPaddieMusic.net

SHSU Students and faculty... want to be on a podcast?

Hello music people! I'm finally settled in to my new job as well as my graduate school responsibilities. I'd like to end my podcast hiatus and start posting again in November. If you're interested in sitting down and having a chat, I'm on campus on Monday and Wednesday and in The Woodlands the rest of the time. If you have any questions about what I do, check out the first few episodes on iTunes or stitcher!

Summer 2017

It's been a busy summer so far! Lots of good stuff has happened, so I'll divide this post up so I remember to get everything!

First, I've been sketching like crazy getting ready for next fall and starting graduate school at Sam. I'm lucky enough to get to make a game plan and interface with Dr. Kyle Kindred somewhat regularly and I'm more excited to get started every day. It's such a privilege to work with him, and I also look forward to studying with Drs. Murphy-Manley and Aschauer as well.

Next, I've had a wonderful time this summer with HITS Theatre down in The Heights. Several runs of Peter Pan Jr. and a run of Side Show with the older kids have been extremely well-received and I think looks like the kids have so much fun! Even though it's children's theatre, I've learned a lot about the medium from Dr. Kindred, Santry Rush, Marley Wisnoski, Ronnie Blaine, and the rest of the talented staff there. I'm super grateful to be able to spend my summers playing good music with great people!

Other playing endeavours have been fulfilling as well. I've played a house show with the guys in Zero Detail, as well as hit the drawing board. Exciting things are coming from Bread's Lair very soon!

I'm back at Dosey Doe with Joe on the first Monday of each month, so check us out!

You can catch me on Tuesdays helping with the Restoration ministry at the Woodlands Church at 7p. Thanks to Keith Malonson for having me out to provide drums for a worthwhile cause!

Space City Performing Arts has a great season planned, and it starts soon! I'm planning a chamber music event schedule for January, and I'm looking for performers and composers. If you're interested, please shoot me an email!

if you've been watching, you may have noticed that Music In Out World has taken a short hiatus. I've decided to take some time to focus on the transition to more regular work for me. Expect the fall to see a return to a regular podcast schedule!

I'm stoked to announce that I've been offered a position with Apple, which is a huge get for me. I've been applying since I was 18, and now I'm finally on! I start training in the first week of August.

Finally, my collection of merch had begun! I have some killer stickers for sale! Check out the merch page and pick one up!

Thank you, lovely people, for your interest and support, and I'll be sure to update you all as more excellent things happen!

cheers,

 -J

New graphics/tweaks on the site - Store coming soon!

Hey music people! You may notice some new art going up on my branded pages. I wanted to take some time to recognise someone who has really helped me feel confident in my image and my online presence. I love the sexy new look, and I think you will too!

Elsa Petersen and I knew each other in high school. We marched on the bassline together at The Woodlands back in 2004. Even back then, Elsa was someone who always seemed to carry a breeze with her when she entered the room. I understand that sounds super cheesy, but it's actually been corroborated!

At any rate, we didn't talk much after high school until we ran into one another at Market Street here in the Woodlands and caught up a little bit. She gave me her business card and I was blown away at how cool and hip her work was. It wasn't until recently that I decided to launch my own brand, but I knew that when I DID, I wanted to work with Elsa.

I'd post images here, but what she's created for me is all over my site already. Her other work is also badass, but I want you to visit her site and go to her instead of just scrolling past her work on here. If you're in need of a graphic designer, and you want to work with someone who is professional, talented, motivated, and an overall lovely person, PLEASE call Elsa. I'm likely going to go on about how awesome these logos are for some time!

https://elsa-petersen.squarespace.com/

My next big project is going to be a store. Right now, I plan to have two or three shirts, several sticker designs, and some other smaller things featuring Elsa's art. If you have any suggestions of things you'd like to see (read, things you'd actually buy!), please let me know. I will also soon be adding a donate button specifically pointed to the podcast. I've totally fallen in love with the medium! Podcast gear costs money though. I also would love to offset the cost of paying talented folks like Elsa who really help it be what it can be. Though podcasts are free, merch sales and donations help eliminate the extra stress of footing the entirety of the bill out of my own pocket. If you like what you see and hear, please consider donating to the cause! I'll post more about that once I get all the kinks worked out, but in the meantime, feel free to let me know what you think about those ideas.

Episode 6 - Marissa Stubbe

Marissa and I sit outside and discuss things such as theatre, training, some good shows, and of course (and obviously) joy nuggets! We're huge comedy fans, so you hear a bit of that in the conversation, but she has some nice insight about how it is working with musicians and being around music, but not being a 'professional musician' (what does that mean, anyway?). It was a good time in a lovely, albeit sneezy place in Houston.

Recent Shows - Action of Summer 2017

Greetings, music (and also other) nerds! I wanted to share briefly about my experience over the last few weeks. I had some wonderful shows and lovely venues with fantastic people. I also have a really long and stressful, yet fulfilling and satisfying few days ahead of me, full of performances! I'll go in order!

12 April 2017 - Dosey Doe

We headlined a show at the Big Barn of Dosey Doe in Spring. We had almost 100 guests who participated in a lively evening of song and dance! It was awesome to play in a space that could actually hold us. We even had a legitimate green room experience for the first time as a band. The show went well, and came complete with lights and a decent recording of a track or two, including the debut of the song "Ruby", written and sung by Seth.

16 April 2017 - Easter Mass at St. Theresa Catholic Church

I got to play with a few UH cats on some simple, but moving brass quartet/timpani. I loved getting to revisit that inspiring space, and I thought we sounded great! I'll be back there some time this summer for another event.

21 April 2017 - Avant Garden

Carthy rolled in for an acoustic show, and set the mood for several poets. It was a simple night, and for a one-off spot, and an open mic feel, the crowd received us well. I love getting to see people share poetry and prose, so it was a great night.

Also, as of next fall, I will be enrolled at Sam Houston Stats University pursuing my Master's in Music Composition! I'm excited to be back in Huntsville doing what I love to do, and learning how to do it better. I'm psyched to start my journey toward a higher higher education! That's a thing, I'm sure... At any rate, I'll be in town for at least two more years, so now that I have made that decision, I will begin setting down my roots for the foreseeable future!

I've got plenty coming up this summer, so stay tuned!

Episode 2 - Drew Karl

John talks with Drew about song-writing, inspiration, John Denver, and other intellectual and existential things!

Drew will definitely be on again!

Buy tickets to the Carthy show at Dosey Doe on 12 April 2017

Also, enjoy a John Denver song

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35x_rwyBh-8

Drew learned to play acoustic guitar in High School for the sole purpose of playing his favorite tunes. Soon after, he began experimenting with writing his own songs, mostly, he said, because at the time he “wasn’t good enough to play anyone else’s.” Drew eventually came to develop a knack for the melodic word, writing meaningful lyrics aimed at speaking to the mind and heart. His main musical inspirations are John Denver and Paul Simon. Other inspirations include Billy Joel, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Chris Martin, and Brandon Flowers. In addition, Drew enjoys all things tech, design, and making YouTube videos with his wife, Caitlan.

3 April 2017 - SCI Featured Composer and Podcast!

I just got a fantastic email! Everyone check out http://www.societyofcomposers.org/index.php . You'll see that I'm the featured composer for the day! This is pretty rad; SCI is an important group for composers and other musicians too.

Also, if you haven't yet, please feel free to check out Episode 1 of Music In Our World! It's available through the previous blog post, and will hopefully soon be available through iTunes (process pending).

I had my first meeting today with the other board members of Space City Performing Arts, and I'm pleased to say that big things are in the works for this group! As soon as more details are available, I'll be happy to share with you all!

Music In Our World! - Episode 1: Heather Woitena

Guys I'm super excited to present our first episode! The audio quality isn't exactly perfect, but the rest of them will be much better. Heather and I have a fun talk about harp, chamber music, gigging, and other musical things! I had originally planned to have a new episode every week, but for now, I'm going to stick to the twice-a-month approach, especially while I'm getting settled in and waiting to find out where I'm going to school in the fall. Please let me know if you have any comments or questions, and enjoy episode 1!

Pieces we talked about in the episode:

Hindemith Harp Sonata - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYtoWC7Jguk

Impromptu by Fauré - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYSeRGzk_nU

Heather's Bio:

Heather Woitena was born and raised in Pasadena, Texas. She began playing the harp at the age of eleven in fifth grade at the instigation of her music elementary school teacher. She earned her Bachelor of Music in Music Performance at Sam Houston State University, and she studied under Paula Page, the former harpist of the Houston Symphony. Following graduation in 2015, she performed with the Talis Festival & Academy in Saas-Fee, Switzerland and moved to Indiana to work as the Alumni Relations Coordinator for the MasterWorks Festival in 2015 and 2016. Heather is continuing her work with musicologist Dr. Sheryl Murphy-Manley to publish a catalogue of works for twentieth-century composer Newton Strandberg, and she is currently working as a freelance harpist and teacher in Houston, Texas.
