Music Education in Chesterfield County - Summer 2018

This summer, while in Chesterfield County, I had the privilege to spend time and work with some extremely dedicated and talented music educators. Virginia has always been an intriguing place to me. Most musicians that I've met that have come from Virginia all the way to Texas have been world-class people, performers, and teachers. It was extremely refreshing to learn that several folks over there share many of my philosophies and appreciate the validation that comes from someone that lives halfway across the country and has a completely different education and pedagogical journey.

The idea that a student-centric approach to marching band design, planning, and implementation is reassuring; it's not secret that I've been a little bit disenchanted about how band program are put together and run, but being over here makes me feel so much better. The students are set up to get everything they need to succeed, and because of that, I've noticed a huge change in just the short time I was there. A month isn't quite long enough to completely change a culture, but empowering the students to create their own environment in which to grow is almost always my goal. The students I taught at Clover Hill and L.C. Bird high school are really taking charge to make band a more fun and fulfilling experience for themselves and their peers joining them over the next couple of years. This was a special month!

Many thanks to Marcus Grant, Buddy Deshler, Brianna Gatch, Mason Gatch, Vincent Guzman, and Charles Brown for working with me this month and showing the students that they are worth our time.

I look forward to working in Chesterfield County next year!

Check out the progress these young folks have made!

I am happy to announce a new business partnership with Los Cabos drumsticks!

I have recently partnered with Los Cabos drumsticks from Canada. I played a pair that my buddy David gave me, and I've been sold. Their jazz sticks are super quick, their 5B's are stable, and I look forward to trying out their parade sticks later this week. If you have any questions about what they do for me, or want to check out some rad sticks, check out their website www.loscabosdrumsticks.com

Zero Detail - Summer/Fall 2018

We in Zero Detail have been quite busy over the last few months. We played several huge venues like White Oak and Warehouse Live, and now we’re taking a break to record. The summer brings some traveling opportunities for me, so while we are taking a break from live shows, we’re using this time to write and record new music for everyone! We’ve got several irons in the fire, including two track by yours truly. You’ll have new Zero Detail in your ears by the end of the summer, and a few more tracks before the year is up. We are also actively booking for the fall, so if you #needZD in your life, contact any one of us, or Andrew at AndrewGarcia@zerodetailmusic.com

Zero Detail - Progress and 10 March show at Warehouse Live!

Good morning music friends!

I wanted to take a moment to shout out my band, Zero Detail (www.ZeroDetailMusic.com). These guys work super hard and I’m so excited to be working with them. Every rehearsal is a wonderful creative outlet, and shows are really just a hang with music instead of a huge chore. We’re building a following in the Houston area, and we’re hoping to expand soon. We’ve been working at Sugar Hill Studios in Houston (sugarhillstudios.com) and couldn’t be more excited to bring you all some new music!

We’re sharing the bill with some super talented folks at Warehouse (Rogues Among Us, Metanoia, and Clay Melton) on 10 March. If you are interested in attending, let one of us know for tickets ($10), or check out the website for Warehouse (WarehouseLive.com) or the TicketFly app or website (TicketFly.com).

Cypress Springs Varsity Winter Guard

I’d like to take this time to recognise the efforts of those in charge of a new client of mine, the Cypress Springs Varsity Winter Guard. They’re competing this season in the Texas Color Guard Circuit. I was fortunate enough to catch a rehearsal of their program “Rule The World”. I worked with director and choreographer Grace Zientek and drill-writer Lee Turner. We combined Lorde’s cover of “Everbody Wants to Rule The World” by Tears for Fears and some original composition of mine specifically for this soundtrack. I’m super excited to be working with these talented and dedicated folks! You can follow their progress on www.texascolorguardcircuit.org

January Recital Recap

A huge thanks to everyone that helped out and contributed their skill and time to the recital last month at the Rec Room! For all the work everyone put in, I feel like it went swimmingly!

I’ll be posting an album with photos from the event in the next week or so, but I’d like to include a few of my favourites!

Thanks to Space City Performing Arts (spacecityperformingarts.org) and the Rec Room (recroomhtx.com) for facilitating this wonderful event! A huge thanks goes out to Brandon MacDougal, Eileen Vaughn, and Esteban Puentes for their help on the operations side of things, as well as Greg and Tash with Rec Room for their help on the logistics side of things. It cannot be said enough that an event like this could not happen without lots of help.

Friends — John Paddie Music

I've updated my Friends and Colleagues page with some wonderful folks!

Luke Kirkwood provides staffing and contracting services for musicians and directors in the Houston area. He's a joy to work with, and his network is extensive; he found me a sub in less than 24 hours, and had the contract signed in a day after that. I recommend him for subs, accompanists, directors, or any other staffing needs you have!

Ben Lee (SoLee Music) is a wonderful arranger and composer for the marching arts. We collaborated in 2017 for Morris HS in Morris, OK, and that arrangement is for sale on Ben's website! If you're looking for a custom show, he's a great resource!

Blog Update

Howdy again! I wanted to share some thoughts about ideas I had for Music In Our World. I'd like to continue along with the interview-style format, and keep a broad and light environment for a meaningful conversation to flow. I'd also like to add to that a solo-style episode where I research and discuss a topic that you (the listeners) provide! If you want my opinion about something or you want me to research a topic and present on it, I'd love to start posting half-hour episodes in line with the interview-style ones. Please let me know what you think here or in an email! John@JohnPaddieMusic.net

SHSU Students and faculty... want to be on a podcast?

Hello music people! I'm finally settled in to my new job as well as my graduate school responsibilities. I'd like to end my podcast hiatus and start posting again in November. If you're interested in sitting down and having a chat, I'm on campus on Monday and Wednesday and in The Woodlands the rest of the time. If you have any questions about what I do, check out the first few episodes on iTunes or stitcher!

Summer 2017

It's been a busy summer so far! Lots of good stuff has happened, so I'll divide this post up so I remember to get everything!

First, I've been sketching like crazy getting ready for next fall and starting graduate school at Sam. I'm lucky enough to get to make a game plan and interface with Dr. Kyle Kindred somewhat regularly and I'm more excited to get started every day. It's such a privilege to work with him, and I also look forward to studying with Drs. Murphy-Manley and Aschauer as well.

Next, I've had a wonderful time this summer with HITS Theatre down in The Heights. Several runs of Peter Pan Jr. and a run of Side Show with the older kids have been extremely well-received and I think looks like the kids have so much fun! Even though it's children's theatre, I've learned a lot about the medium from Dr. Kindred, Santry Rush, Marley Wisnoski, Ronnie Blaine, and the rest of the talented staff there. I'm super grateful to be able to spend my summers playing good music with great people!

Other playing endeavours have been fulfilling as well. I've played a house show with the guys in Zero Detail, as well as hit the drawing board. Exciting things are coming from Bread's Lair very soon!

I'm back at Dosey Doe with Joe on the first Monday of each month, so check us out!

You can catch me on Tuesdays helping with the Restoration ministry at the Woodlands Church at 7p. Thanks to Keith Malonson for having me out to provide drums for a worthwhile cause!

Space City Performing Arts has a great season planned, and it starts soon! I'm planning a chamber music event schedule for January, and I'm looking for performers and composers. If you're interested, please shoot me an email!

if you've been watching, you may have noticed that Music In Out World has taken a short hiatus. I've decided to take some time to focus on the transition to more regular work for me. Expect the fall to see a return to a regular podcast schedule!

I'm stoked to announce that I've been offered a position with Apple, which is a huge get for me. I've been applying since I was 18, and now I'm finally on! I start training in the first week of August.

Finally, my collection of merch had begun! I have some killer stickers for sale! Check out the merch page and pick one up!

Thank you, lovely people, for your interest and support, and I'll be sure to update you all as more excellent things happen!

cheers,

 -J

New graphics/tweaks on the site - Store coming soon!

Hey music people! You may notice some new art going up on my branded pages. I wanted to take some time to recognise someone who has really helped me feel confident in my image and my online presence. I love the sexy new look, and I think you will too!

Elsa Petersen and I knew each other in high school. We marched on the bassline together at The Woodlands back in 2004. Even back then, Elsa was someone who always seemed to carry a breeze with her when she entered the room. I understand that sounds super cheesy, but it's actually been corroborated!

At any rate, we didn't talk much after high school until we ran into one another at Market Street here in the Woodlands and caught up a little bit. She gave me her business card and I was blown away at how cool and hip her work was. It wasn't until recently that I decided to launch my own brand, but I knew that when I DID, I wanted to work with Elsa.

I'd post images here, but what she's created for me is all over my site already. Her other work is also badass, but I want you to visit her site and go to her instead of just scrolling past her work on here. If you're in need of a graphic designer, and you want to work with someone who is professional, talented, motivated, and an overall lovely person, PLEASE call Elsa. I'm likely going to go on about how awesome these logos are for some time!

https://elsa-petersen.squarespace.com/

My next big project is going to be a store. Right now, I plan to have two or three shirts, several sticker designs, and some other smaller things featuring Elsa's art. If you have any suggestions of things you'd like to see (read, things you'd actually buy!), please let me know. I will also soon be adding a donate button specifically pointed to the podcast. I've totally fallen in love with the medium! Podcast gear costs money though. I also would love to offset the cost of paying talented folks like Elsa who really help it be what it can be. Though podcasts are free, merch sales and donations help eliminate the extra stress of footing the entirety of the bill out of my own pocket. If you like what you see and hear, please consider donating to the cause! I'll post more about that once I get all the kinks worked out, but in the meantime, feel free to let me know what you think about those ideas.

Episode 6 - Marissa Stubbe

Marissa and I sit outside and discuss things such as theatre, training, some good shows, and of course (and obviously) joy nuggets! We're huge comedy fans, so you hear a bit of that in the conversation, but she has some nice insight about how it is working with musicians and being around music, but not being a 'professional musician' (what does that mean, anyway?). It was a good time in a lovely, albeit sneezy place in Houston.
